What is it about?

Agent -Sully- Sullivan is one of the top cops in the Imperial Bureau of Investigation. A veteran witch of the British Empire who isn’t afraid to use her magical skills to crack a case. But Sully might need more than a good education and raw power to stop the string of grisly murders that have been springing up across the American Colonies. Every one of them marked by the same chilling calling card, a warning in the form of a legion of voices screaming out through the killers’ mouths: -It IS tHe YEAr oF the KNife.-

Sully’s investigation will drag her away from the comforts of home in New Amsterdam, the beautiful but useless hyacinth macaw that used to be her boss, and the loving arms of her undead girlfriend, in a thrilling race against time, demonic forces and a shadowy conspiracy that will do anything to keep its hold on power and ensure that Sully takes their secrets to her grave, as soon as possible.

My Review

This is an urban fantasy thriller set in July 2015 in which people are being possessed by something that is making them killed people and say «it is the year of the knife». Powerful witch and IBI investigator Sully is assigned to the case to investigate these successes that are happening with more and more frequency. What is it behind these killings? What is the purpose?

«…I find that the number of people I can truly call a friend dwindles as more and more become business associates and place distance between us for the sake of their political ambitions. Or they simply pass away»

This was a very interesting and intriguing read, something that has nothing to do with what I have read so far.

Diverse and interesting set of characters

Sully is such an interesting character. She is a very powerful witch and an investigator for the IBI. She is such a strong and intelligent woman that risks her life to protect the people of New Amsterdam on more than one occasion. She was in the Navy before and now she is serving in another force to help protect people.

She is sharp and strong and goes after whatever evil there is even if she is alone. She has gone up on the list for favorite detective.

Aside from Sully there are other great characters in the story. For example, Raavi the medical examiner which is not a normal human being either, and has a twisted sense of humor. Or Leonard Pratt, the pompous academic and curse breaker that can get to your nerves.

Intriguing and mysterious

The part that I enjoyed the most was trying to figure out what was causing such horrible deaths around the Empire. You didn’t know who could be next, who could be controlled and what did they planned to do.

«..Eyes forward…Learned it in the Navy when things got a bit rough. You can’t change what it is behind you, you can’t even change what is happening right now, all you can change is what happens next»

It was a delightful read to discover layer after layer of mystery unfolding. I was really impressed with what happened and what was the reasoning behind all the murders.

Though I enjoyed it I found that I would have liked a bit more about the world building and the different species and what they could do. I was a bit lost sometimes with who had powers and who didn’t.

About the Author

GDPenmanGD Penman writes Speculative Fiction. He lives in Scotland with his partner and children, some of whom are human. He is a firm believer in the axiom that any story is made better by dragons. His beard has won an award. If you have ever read a story with Kaiju and queer people, it was probably one of his. In those few precious moments that he isn’t parenting or writing he likes to watch cartoons, play video and tabletop games, read more books than are entirely feasible and continues his quest to eat the flesh of every living species.
